ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Army wrestling team was unable to overcome an early deficit against Navy, as the Midshipmen collected a 29-6 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) win in the annual "Star" Match on Friday evening in front of 2,003 fans at Alumni Hall.
The Black Knights finish the regular season 8-4 overall and 7-4 in the EIWA, while the Midshipmen improve to 5-1 and 2-1. Army seniors Paul Hancock (157 pounds) and Ryan Tompkins (184) each picked up wins in final dual matches of their respective careers.
The match began with the 133 pound bout, where Logan Everett fell to Navy's Colton Rasche by a count of 6-2, as the Midshipmen took an early 3-0 advantage. The hosts extended their lead to 11-0 with wins in each of the next two matches, including a 17-2 technical fall by Alex Johnson at 149. In the 141 match-up, Army senior Tyler Rauenzahn battled to a 3-3 tie and already secured the riding time point in the final moments before Patrick Prada recorded a takedown with one second remaining in the third period to earn a 5-4 decision.
Hancock gave the visitors their first victory of the night, claiming a 10-5 win over Bobby Burg at 157 pounds. Hancock raced out to an 8-2 advantage, thanks to a pair of reversals, a two-point near fall and a takedown, and held on for the 10-5 decision. Peyton Walsh triumphed for a 5-1 win in the 165 pound bout before No. 10 Mathew Miller topped sophomore Brian Harvey (174), 11-7, to give Navy a 17-3 lead after six matches.
Tompkins led by a 5-1 margin after the second period and didn't look back, as he claimed a 6-2 win for Army at 184 to bring the visitors to within 11 points. Navy's Paul Rands and Colynn Cook secured victories in the 197 and 285 pound matches, respectively, while Brenden Campbell posted a fall in the final match of the evening.
Army will take a week off before competing at the EIWA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., on March 8 and 9.
Match Notes: Army falls to 5-48-5 all-time versus Navy ... Paul Hancock and Ryan Tompkins each picked up wins to finish the regular season 24-10 and 21-8, respectively ... Hancock, Tompkins, Tyler Rauenzahn and Nathan Santhanam all competed in their final regular-season matches.
