Army In First Place Following First Day At New York State Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. - Eight Black Knights advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes to lead the Army wrestling team into first place following the opening day of competition at the 43rd annual New York State Championships on Saturday inside Newman Arena on the campus of Cornell University.

Army piled up 91.5 points to move to the top of the 15-team field after the first day of action. Cornell (76 points) resides in second place, followed by Columbia (73.5), Nassau (69.5) and Buffalo (54.5).

Freshman Scott Filbert (125 pounds), senior Travis Coffey (125), junior Jordan Thome (133), junior Casey Smith (141), sophomore Ryan Bilyeu (149), freshman Chandler Smith (157), freshman Cole Gracey (165) and senior Michael Gorman (184) each authored perfect 2-0 records on the day to move into the Sunday's semifinal round.

Filbert began his run to the semifinals at 125 pounds by pinning Oneonta's Joey Thomson in 1 minute, 43 seconds. The Black Knight freshmen then pinned top-seeded Max Soria of Buffalo in 1:40.

Coffey made it two Black Knights in the semifinals of the 125-pound draw by taking an 11-1 major decision from Brockport's Rocco Rosso and earning a 7-2 decision versus Nassau's Joe DeAngelo.

Thome, the top-seeded wrestler at 133 pounds, cruised into the semifinals by defeating Brockport's James McCabe (injury default, 4:24) and Cortland's Sean Kempf (fall, 1:09).

Casey Smith was unseeded in the 141-pound draw, but he slipped past a pair of seeded wrestlers to reach the semifinals. Smith began the day by knocking off Cornell's fifth-seeded Joe Stanzione (5-4) and Columbia's fourth-seeded Matt Bystol (4-2) to advance in the championship bracket.

Bilyeu, the fourth-seeded wrestler at 149 pounds, coasted to a pair of easy victories en route to the semifinals. The second-year grappler took a major decision from Jamestown's Nick Bennett (18-4) and scored a technical fall versus Cortland's Andre Berry (18-3).

Chandler Smith, representing Army in the 157-pound draw, knocked off Oneonta's Dan Graff (8-2) and Nassau's Luke Speno (5-4) to make the semifinals.

Gracey, seeded second at 165 pounds, pinned Ithaca's Grant Dickey in six minutes, four seconds, before earning a 15-5 major decision versus RIT's Tory Cain.

Gorman, meanwhile, authored a pair of major decisions to advance to the semifinals in the 184-pound bracket. He cruised past RIT's Tyler Brent (14-5) in the opening round before taking down Jamestown's Chris Woods (26-11) in the quarterfinals.

Army will conclude competition at the New York State Championships on Sunday, Jan. 22, beginning at 9 a.m.
