HAMPTON, Va. -
Freshman Bryce Barnes recorded a major decision at 197 pounds and two other Black Knights won bouts, but it was not enough as the Army wrestling team fell to 18th-ranked Edinboro, 25-10, in the opening round of the 33rd annual Virginia Duals on Saturday at Hampton Coliseum.
Edinboro (5-1) won the first five bouts to establish a commanding 19-0 advantage, and the Fighting Scots never looked back en route to the victory. Barnes, junior Paul Hancock and sophomore Cole Gracey each won bouts to lead Army (2-3).
Edinboro, seeded third in the tournament, advances in the championship bracket and will face sixth-seeded Old Dominion in the quarterfinals later this afternoon. Army, meanwhile, will battle The Citadel in the consolation draw at 3 p.m.
Hancock posted Army's first win of the match when he defeated Johnny Greisheimer, 13-8, in the 165-pound bout. Gracey followed with a dominant 7-1 decision versus Patrick Jennings in the 174-pound matchup, trimming Army's deficit to 19-6.
Barnes supplied the Black Knights with their third and final victory of the match when he secured a 16-5 major decision opposite Warren Bosch in the 197-pound bout.
