CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Senior Jordan Thome posted a 3-1 mark with two pins at 133 pounds to lead the Army wrestling team on the first day of competition at the Southern Scuffle on Tuesday.

The Black Knights racked up 36.5 points and finished the opening day of the tournament in ninth place out of 24 schools. Penn State leads the event with 102 points, followed by Minnesota (94), Oklahoma State (89.5) and Cornell (84.5). Missouri rounds out the top five with 75 points.

Thome began the day with a 7-3 victory opposite Appalachian State's Brett Boston. Then, after dropping into the consolation draw, the Troy, Ohio, native reeled off consecutive pins against Minnesota's Randy Hanson (4:08) and Air Force's Dylan Hyder (1:42). Thome's two wins by fall move him into sole possession of ninth place on Army's all-time pins list (31).

Army still has two wrestlers competing in the consolation bracket of the 141-pound draw with senior Connor Hanafee and junior Tyler Rauenzahn both in the mix. Rauenzahn defeated Appalachian State's Acton Pifer, 11-4, before being awarded a win via medical forfeit versus Missouri's Nicholas Hucke. The third-year wrestler then fell in the quarterfinals and will face Hanafee in a consolation round bout tomorrow. Hanafee, who finished the day with a 4-1 mark, won three straight matches in the consolation bracket to reach Wednesday's action.

Junior 165-pounder Paul Hancock opened the event by posting a 12-4 major decision versus Duke's Randy Roden. He then upended Chattanooga's Josh Condon, 8-6, before falling in the quarterfinals. He will continue his run through the 165-pound draw tomorrow in the consolation bracket.

Junior 149-pounder John Belanger started the tournament with a loss, but the third-year grappler rattled off three consecutive wins in the consolation draw and will continue wrestling tomorrow.

Army will close out competition at the Southern Scuffle on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
