CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Senior Jimmy Rafferty and sophomore David White turned in outstanding performances on the first day of competition at the Southern Scuffle on Sunday, leading the Army wrestling team into 16th place at the prestigious two-day event.

The Black Knights have piled up 22.5 points as a team. Defending champion Penn State leads the 23-team field with 118.0 points. Minnesota (110.5 points) and Missouri (83.5) round out the top three.

Rafferty dropped his initial bout at 157 pounds before reeling off four straight victories to advance in the consolation draw. One of the Black Knights' two co-captains, Rafferty defeated Minnesota's Matt Mincey (7-3), Ohio's Casey Gordon (4-2), Gardner Webb's Alex Medved (5-2) and Missouri's Austin Lindsay (3-1) in order to remain in the hunt.

White, meanwhile, posted a 3-1 mark in the 125-pound bracket, and remains in contention heading into tomorrow's action. The Athens, Pa., native began the tournament by posting a dominant 15-0 technical fall versus Indiana's Nick Simpson. After falling into the consolation draw, White upended Jake Corrill and then capped his day by pinning Old Dominion's Jerome Robinson in five minutes, 50 seconds.

Juniors Casey Smith and Connor Hanafee each registered 2-2 marks at 141 pounds, but both were eliminated.

Freshman Scott Filbert (125 pounds), sophomore Ryan Tompkins (174), senior Michael Gorman (184), senior Derek Stanley (197) and freshman Stephen Snyder (285) all finished 1-2 and were ousted from the tournament.

Army will wrap up competition at the Southern Scuffle on Monday, Jan. 2. The Black Knights will then return to West Point on Sunday, Jan. 8, to host EIWA rival Rutgers at Christl Arena.
