WEST POINT, N.Y. -
With just two regular-season matches remaining, the Army men's tennis team plays host to the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m. The nonconference match against NJIT will be followed by Army's regular season finale at Patriot League rival Boston University on Saturday, April 19.
Army will honor its five seniors - Joshua Cook, Asika Isoh, Henry Jang-Milsten, Chad Llewellyn and Rommel Verano - during a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match. Thursday will be the last time the Black Knights play home in the regular season, but Army fans will have a chance to see the team next weekend, as Army hosts the Patriot League Tournament on April 24-27.
Army (16-4, 6-0 PL) picked up its eighth straight win on April 12, posting a 4-3 victory over service-academy rival Navy. Navy grabbed the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, but the Black Knights picked up wins in four of the six singles matches to notch the victory.
Junior Alex Van Velzer collected a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6, while sophomores Caison Best and Harrison McCormick each took down their opponent, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. The Midshipmen recorded wins at the top two singles flights, but Army freshman Grant Riechmann clinched the match, outlasting his counterpart, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in the fourth slot.
NJIT (11-5) will take its three-match winning streak to West Point to conclude its regular season on Thursday. The Highlanders are coming off a 4-2 victory over Stony Brook on April 13. The pairings of senior Holger Norregaard and sophomore Markus Schultz, and sophomores Arnaud Holl and Carl Jedlinksi each posted doubles wins against the Seawolves, while Holl, Schultz and classmates Andres Alban and Erik Artursson collected singles decisions.
Army shows a 5-0 record all-time against NJIT, most recently earning a 4-3 victory on Feb. 23, 2013 at West Point.
