WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army men's tennis team will play its next two matches against nonconference opponents before finishing the regular season against Patriot League foe Boston University. The Black Knights will get started in their final week of regular-season competition when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match at Marist.
Army (16-4, 6-0 PL) picked up its eighth straight win on Saturday after posting a 4-3 victory over service-academy rival Navy. Navy grabbed the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, but the Black Knights picked up wins in four of the six singles matches to notch the victory.
Junior Alex Van Velzer collected a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6, while sophomores Caison Best and Harrison McCormick each took down their opponent, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. The Midshipmen recorded wins at the top two singles flights, but Army freshman Grant Riechmann clinched the match, outlasting his counterpart, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in the fourth slot.
Marist (12-4, 6-0 MAAC) is coming off a 7-0 sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Quinnipiac on April 9. After winning all three doubles matches, the Red Foxes received singles wins from seniors Dalen Klassen, Will Reznek and Lorenzo Rossi, juniors Joseph Dube and Matteo Giudici and sophomore Fredrik Bjerke. Winners of five straight, Marist will face Army in the second day of back-to-back competitions, as it hosts Monmouth Monday afternoon.
Army is 14-5 all-time against Marist, but the Red Foxes have won each of the last four meetings, most recently topping the Black Knights, 4-3, on Feb. 24, 2013 in West Point. Army's last win in the series came in a 5-2 decision on March 28, 2008.
Following Tuesday, Army will return home for a Senior Day match against NJIT on April 17 before facing Boston University in a road contest on April 19.
