STONY BROOK, N.Y. –
Final Stats
Army men’s tennis competed in its first tournament of the fall season on Friday and Saturday, totaling a 20-17 mark at the Stony Brook Invitational. The Black Knights faced opponents from Quinnipiac, Wagner, Bowdoin, Stevens Tech, Hamilton, Concordia and the host Seawolves.
Junior Asika Isoh and freshman Harrison McCormick captured the B Doubles bracket title to highlight the weekend. Isoh, who led the team in total doubles victories last season with 22, teamed with the Army newcomer Harrison to cruise to four consecutive victories over two days. The pair defeated Quinnipiac’s Alain Grullon and Chris Nelson, 8-1, in the first round, followed by an 8-5 victory opposite Bowdoin’s Peter Davis and Eric Chien.
In the semifinals, the Army pair was pitted against SBU’s Albert Fontova and Robert Forai, defeating the home team by a score of 8-3. In the bracket’s deciding match, Isoh and McCormick knocked off Bowdoin’s Chase Savage and Luka Trinka 8-6, to begin the season with a flawless 4-0 mark.
In singles play, Isoh went 1-1 in the A bracket, while McCormick authored a 3-1 record in the D singles bracket, falling to Fontova in the finale.
Overall, the Black Knights went 10-9 in singles and 9-5 in doubles in the first action of the 2012-13 season. Army will resume play in two weeks when it takes the courts at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Sept. 22-23, for the USTA Collegiate Invitational.
