WEST POINT, N.Y. - The top-seeded Army men's tennis team withstood a late charge by fourth-seeded Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights will face the winner of a second semifinal match between No. 2 Boston University and No. 3 Navy on Sunday at 1 p.m., marking Army's 11th trip to the conference title match under 12th-year head coach Jim Poling.

The Black Knights improve to 19-5 following their win, while the Mountain Hawks finish the year 12-8. The Army-Lehigh match was played inside at Lichtenberg Tennis Center due to wet playing conditions following early-morning rain showers.

"It was a tremendous college match, right down to the wire," said Poling. "We played so well in the beginning and got ahead of Lehigh, but they fought their way back into the match. They're a good team and we're a good team. It came down to a few little things and we won some big points."

Army battled to win the doubles point over Lehigh, as freshmen Sam Lampman and Grant Riechmann topped Lehigh's Ben Gilman and Jeremy Kochman, 8-5, at No. 2 before sophomore Austin McCasin and freshman Kyle Barnes claimed an 8-6 decision over Tyler Hansen and Timur Chernykh at the third position.

The Black Knights set the tone early in singles competition, with Riechmann and junior Alex Van Velzer each winning to give Army a 3-0 lead in the match. Van Velzer topped Hansen, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 before Riechmann bested Lehigh's Mitchell Petersen, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), at the third spot. Gilman made the score 3-1 after topping Lampman by a count of 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, but Army sophomore Caison Best won the clinching match with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 decision over Kochman in the fourth position.

Army returns to the court tomorrow for a Patriot League Tournament Championship match against the winner of the other semifinal contest between Boston University and Navy.
