WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis started Patriot League play on Friday with 7-0 sweeps over visiting Lafayette and Holy Cross. The Black Knights began conference matches with a pair of shutouts for the second consecutive season thanks to the contributions of 14 different players who combined for six doubles wins and 12 straight-set singles victories.

Junior Asika Isoh and freshman Harrison McCormick recorded milestone wins for Army (11-5, 2-0 Patriot League) as each recorded their 10th singles wins of the dual season. Isoh and McCormick played both doubles and singles against Lafayette (2-5, 0-1 PL), teaming for a doubles win (8-1 at No. 1) before capturing their respective singles victories. Isoh defeated Brandon Goldstein 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 to improve to 10-3, while McCormick bested Alex Charchalis 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 to move to 10-3.

Playing in just his second dual of the season, sophomore Alex Van Velzer secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory over LC’s Brian Stefanowicz at No. 4. Senior Rashad Shelton (7-5, 6-4 at No. 2), sophomore Peter Sienko (6-0, 6-0 at No. 3) and freshman Caison Best (6-2, 6-3 at No. 5) also earned singles wins over the Leopards.

Hours later against Holy Cross, Best captured his second straight-set singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 1. Also highlighting the match against the Crusaders was freshman Daniel Shutov’s collegiate debut in which he recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6, while classmate Ben Davies won his fifth consecutive match with a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 3.

"It was a great way to begin Patriot League play," said Army head coach Jim Poling. "Everyone really did their part towards getting these wins today. It was exciting to see some of our younger guys get on to the court and show what they can do. We'll be ready for Lehigh on Sunday."

Army’s Patriot League tripleheader will be rounded out on Sunday morning when the Black Knights host Lehigh at 10 a.m. Army will look to avenge a rare regular-season loss to the Mountain Hawks from 2012. Lehigh shows an 11-3 record but will face Holy Cross on Saturday evening prior to its match against Army.
