Men's Tennis Finishes 2-1 In Army Shootout

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men's tennis team went 2-1 during competition at the Army Shootout on Saturday and Sunday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights defeated St. Bonaventure, 7-0, on Saturday before falling to Binghamton, 5-2, during a split dual match spanning from Saturday to Sunday. Army closed out the weekend with a 6-1 decision over Drexel on Sunday. After going 2-1 on the weekend, the Black Knights move to 6-1 overall.

Freshman Sam Lampman went 3-0 in singles matches, while juniors Roman Cacha, Peter Sienko and Alex Van Velzer posted marks of 2-0. Freshman Grant Riechmann also recorded multiple wins, finishing 2-1. Four Black Knights were unbeaten in doubles action, including Sienko, Van Velzer, Lampman and freshman Kyle Barnes, who all went 2-0.

Army took the doubles point against St. Bonaventure, as Riechmann and sophomore Harrison McCormick posted an 8-7 win at the top position and Lampman and Sienko teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 3. Lampman grabbed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over St. Bonaventure's Eduardo Irizarry at the No. 1 singles position, while Riechmann battled back from a second-set loss to pick up a 6-1, 4-7, 6-1 win over Elliot Fanshel in the second slot.

Cacha, Sienko, Van Velzer and sophomore Ben Davies also collected singles victories, as the Black Knights swept past the Bonnies in singles play.

Army played the singles portion of its dual match against Binghamton on Saturday evening, with the Bearcats taking a 4-2 lead into Sunday's doubles competition. At the No. 1 singles spot, Lampman earned a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Binghamton's Alexander Maisin, while Van Velzer managed a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 decision at No. 4. On Sunday, Barnes and McCasin posted Army's only doubles win over Binghamton, as they topped the pairing of Ismael Dinia and Eliott Hureau, 8-4.

The hosts won the doubles point against Drexel by sweeping all three matches, including wins by Lampman/McCormick, Barnes/McCasin and Sienko/Van Velzer. In singles play, Army claimed five of the six matches, with Lampman and Riechmann notching wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Sophomore Caison Best earned a 6-3, 7-6 win over Drexel's Dan Koehler at the fourth position, and Sienko and Cacha were victorious at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Army will hit the road for the first time this spring, when the Black Knights travel to Charleston, S.C., for a pair of matches. Army will face The Citadel on Friday, Feb. 28 at 2:30 p.m. before battling service-academy rival Air Force in a neutral site match on Sunday, March 2.
