WEST POINT, N.Y. - In what was supposed to be a three-match weekend, Army men's tennis salvaged a snow-filled three days with a 7-0 win over Division III regional foe Vassar on Sunday night at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. Army won eight of the nine matches in straight sets to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
The Black Knights jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches with 8-1 decisions. Junior Asika Isoh and freshman Harrison McCormick snagged their second doubles win of the season and first at No. 1, defeating Andrew Guzick and Dan Freeman for the first win of the day. Freshmen David Proctor and Sam Jang-Milsten clinched the doubles point with their win at No. 3 over Christian Phelps and Evan Udine.
Senior Rashad Shelton made it a 2-0 match in favor of Army with his second win of the dual season, a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Daniel Cooper at No. 4. The lead extended at 3-0 after McCormick extended his undefeated mark in singles play to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 edging of Phelps at No. 5.
Sophomore Peter Sienko recorded the match-clinching point at No. 2, knocking off Dan Freeman 6-2, 6-0 to jump to 2-1 on the young season, including 2-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore Roman Cacha and Isoh followed with straight-set wins of their own before freshman Caison Best battled to a 6-2, 7-6(7-3) win at No. 3 for his first collegiate dual-match win.
The Black Knights improved to 5-0 all-time against the Brewers.
Army will use the three-day weekend next week to rest before hosting a tripleheader Feb. 22-24 which includes matches against Fairfield, NJIT and Marist.
