Sprint Football Lands 18 on All-League Teams

WEST POINT, N.Y. – College Sprint Football League runners-up, the Army Black Knights, had 18 cadets recognized by the conference on Thursday, as six earned first-team honors, five were named to the second team, and seven were donned honorable mention. Army finished the season with a 5-2 record, including 5-1 in CSFL contests.

The Black Knights, who boasted the top offense in the league by averaging 487 yards per game, collected 11 offensive recognitions. Junior wide receiver Cody Nyp repeated as a first-team selection, while sophomore WR Tom Jeffers earned first-team plaudits after being named to the second team a year ago. Nyp led the CSFL in receiving yards per game (98.6) and touchdowns (12), while Jeffers totaled the most receptions (57) and ranked second in yards per game (94.6) and touchdowns (9).

Junior running back Marquis Morris earned conference recognition for the first time in his career after ranking third in the CSFL in yards per game with a 59.3 average. Sophomore Jared Sturgell rounded out Army’s offensive first-team honorees after helping the Black Knight offensive line rank second in rushing yards per game (153.3) and sacks allowed (5).

On the defensive side of the ball, senior co-captain JP Cooper earned first-team recognition after tying for the league lead in interceptions with four. Junior lineman Noah Currie rounded out Army’s first-team members, ranking third in the league in tackles with 57, including 5.5 for a loss.

Junior quarterback Javier Sustaita, senior wide receiver Ben Johnson, junior offensive lineman Peter Duff, senior linebacker Mike Meier and sophomore special teams member Patrick Franco were all named to the All-CSFL second team. Sustaita led the league in passing yards per game, touchdowns, completion percentage and rushing touchdowns and yards per game by a quarterback. Meier played defense for the first time in his career after earning first-team honors as a running back a year ago, while Johnson earned CSFL recognition for the third time in his career (2010 honorable mention; 2009 first team).

Seven Black Knights earned honorable mention: junior RB Tim Meier, senior OL Weston Boose, junior OL Jacob Risinger, junior WR John Herina, junior LB Robert Reckner, junior DL Erik Houston, and junior K Kevin Scruggs.  

Navy, the 2011 CSFL Champions, led all teams with 27 honorees, including seven on the first team. Midshipman running back David Williams was named the conference’s MVP after averaging nearly 200 yards rushing per game.
