CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
Army senior defender Mitch Johnson and Black Knight sophomore goalkeeper Winston Boldt were among the 11 Patriot League men's soccer student-athletes named to the conference's Academic All-League Team, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
It marks the third straight season that Johnson has been included on the unit, which takes into consideration performance both on the field and in the classroom. In order to be considered for inclusion on the team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be a starter or key contributor. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
Johnson played in 12 games this season and drew six starts for the Black Knights. He registered his first point since the 2010 campaign when he assisted on Jason Lewis' game-winning goal at Bucknell on Oct. 20. Johnson was an integral part of an Army defense that limited the opposition to 1.53 goals per game and posted three shutouts in 2012.
The Dublin, Ohio, product has forged a 4.132 GPA in Mechanical Engineering since arriving at the Academy. Johnson, who is currently ranked second academically in his class of 1,089, has copped a plethora of academic awards during his four years at West Point. He twice earned the Academy's prestigious Leader-Athlete Award for posting the highest cadet performance score among student-athletes.
Johnson, who has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each of the past three seasons, has received the Superintendent's Award for ranking within the top five percent of his class in academic GPA, physical GPA and military GPA. He has been named a Dean's Penthathlete each of the last three years for recording grades higher than an "A-minus" in every class, including academic, physical education and military science courses.
Boldt was named to the Academic All-League Team for the first time in his career. The second-year keeper posted a 1.46 goals-against average and .732 save percentage in 17 starts this season. The St. Louis, Mo., native also excels in the classroom where he boasts a 3.607 GPA as a double major in International Relations and Portuguese.
Boldt, who ranks 74th in his class of 1,211, was selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a freshman last season. Like Johnson, Boldt has also collected the Superintendent's Award for ranking within the top five percent of his class in all three GPAs.
Army finished the 2012 campaign with a 4-10-3 overall record (1-3-3 PL). The Black Knights will return several starters and key contributors next season.
