WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men's soccer team will begin its 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Black Knights host rival service academy Virginia Military Institute at 12 p.m. at Clinton Field.
Live stats will be provided for the game through Army's official website (www.goARMYsports.com). In-game Twitter updates will also be offered via the men's soccer team's official handle (@Army_MSoccer) as well as the official Black Knights handle (@ArmyAthletics).
Army returns 14 letterwinners from last season's squad, which finished with a 4-10-3 overall record.
Three different Black Knights earned Patriot League weekly awards last season, with junior Winston Boldt racking up four Goalkeeper of the Week nods. Junior Tommy Jaeger was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week once, while sophomore Jordan Lee earned a Rookie of the Week accolade.
Boldt posted a 1.46 goals against average and three shutouts while starting all 17 games a season ago. He allowed one goal or fewer in 12 of his 17 contests, including a five-game stretch late in the season over which the Black Knights were 2-2-1.
VMI returns 18 members of its 2012 team that finished 2-14-1, including junior Blake McCauley, who led the Keydets with four goals in 16 starts last season. In goal, senior Daniel Kitchen paced all VMI keepers with 12 starts and one shutout a year ago.
Army and VMI will meet for just the second time as the Keydets make their initial visit to West Point on Friday. The Black Knights claimed a 1-0 decision in 2011 when the service academies met in Lexington, Va.
Army is back in action on Monday, Sept. 2, when it hosts Manhattan at 7 p.m. The Black Knights suffered a 1-0 road setback to the Jaspers last season.
