2014 Army Lacrosse Schedule
WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Six home games, including the 93rd meeting between Army and Navy, and the great anticipation of a newly expanded Patriot League highlight the 2014 Army lacrosse schedule, released on Tuesday morning. The Black Knights officially kickoff the 2014 slate with a Feb. 9 home contest against Massachusetts at Michie Stadium.
Army faces rival Navy on Saturday, April 12, in the team's final home regular season game of the season. In addition, the Black Knights will go up against four teams that were ranked in the final national polls last spring - Notre Dame in the non-conference regular-season finale and Loyola, Lehigh and Bucknell during the Patriot League slate.
Army welcomes back 2013 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year John Glesener, along with all-league performers Sam Somers, Jimbo D'Aprile and Alex Daly for the 2014 campaign.
"As always, our focus remains on the conference schedule as a pathway to get us into the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Joe Alberici, who enters his ninth season as Army's mentor. "With the addition of Loyola and Boston University to the Patriot League, already one of the toughest conferences in the country immediately got tougher. We welcome that, along with an aggressive non-conference schedule, to help us get better each time we step on the field.
"I know our team and fans are ecstatic for the return of the Army-Navy rivalry to Michie Stadium," Alberici continued. "That game is circled on the calendar every year and we could not be more excited to play in front our home crowd. We're also excited about the renewal of a series with Notre Dame, which has proven to be one of the premiere programs in our sport in recent memory," Alberici added.
Army ushers in the 2014 campaign with the Feb. 9 home date with UMass. The Black Knights have opened each of the last three seasons against the Minutemen and are looking for their first season-opening win since 2010. The following two weekends include a trip to VMI (Feb. 15) and a neutral-site test against one of Division I lacrosse's newest programs in Furman. The Black Knights and Paladins will faceoff on Feb. 22 on the campus of Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Army opens the Patriot League portion of its schedule at Lafayette on Saturday, March, 1 at noon. The Black Knights host Rutgers on Tuesday of that week before resuming conference play at home opposite Holy Cross on Saturday, March 8.
The following week has the Black Knights traveling to new Patriot League brethren Loyola for a Saturday afternoon affair on March 15. The Greyhounds join the formidable Patriot League this season, just two years removed from winning the national title in 2012. Loyola makes its way to the Patriot League from the ECAC.
Army closes out a busy March with back-to-back Patriot League home games against Lehigh and Bucknell. The defending champion Mountain Hawks finished last season ranked 10th in the national coaches poll, while Bucknell landed 15th in the final listing.
April opens with Army visiting the league's other new addition as the Black Knights travel to Boston University on Saturday, April 5. The Terriers are under the direction of head coach Ryan Polley and begin their first season of Division I lacrosse in 2014.
The highly anticipated Army-Navy clash is set for Saturday, April 12, at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights captured an unprecedented fifth-straight "star" against the Midshipmen last season in Annapolis, Md., and have won the last three meetings at home.
Army closes out its regular-season Patriot League slate at Colgate on Saturday, April 18, in Hamilton, N.Y. The game will serve as the team's final test before an expanded 2014 Patriot League Tournament. The top six teams will make the playoff field, which will begin with first-round games on Tuesday, April 22, and finish with semifinals and the championship game on April 25 and 27, respectively. The Black Knights have made the Patriot League Tournament, which previously included the conference's top four teams, every season under Alberici's watch.
Army is slated to visit Notre Dame for a final regular-season test on Saturday, May 3. The Black Knights and Fighting Irish have met four times in series history with the last game being an 11-8 Army win in 2002. Notre Dame, which finished last year ranked sixth in the national coaches poll, holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series.
