Somers, Schultz Named To Academic All-Patriot League Team

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - As the Patriot League continues to announce its 2014 men's lacrosse awards this week, junior goalkeeper Sam Somers and sophomore close defenseman Austin Schultz both earned Academic All-Patriot League honors on Wednesday afternoon.

Not only does the pair help anchor an Army defense that ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in scoring defense, both carry well over the required 3.20 cumulative grade-point average to be considered for Academic All-Patriot League plaudits. Somers carries a 3.369 GPA and is a Philosophy major on the Nuclear Engineering track. The Wilton, Conn., native minors in Persian. Schultz owns a 3.783 GPA in Economics.  

Somers currently leads the nation in goals-against average (5.43) and save percentage (.622), while starting 10 games in the cage. His only non-starts have come in the Black Knights' last two contests due to injury. Name a midseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, Somers earned second team All-Patriot League honors for the second-straight season on Monday afternoon. He has been a member of the West Point Dean's List every semester and is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient. Somers is a member of the West Point Cadet Film Forum, co-founded Academy's Persian Club and spent part of last summer training in Tajikistan.

Schultz, a transfer from Bucknell, has started every game on Army's close defense. He has held some of the conference's top attackmen in check, including Navy's T.J. Hanzsche (zero points), Bucknell's Sean Doyle (one goal). The Lancaster, Pa., native's best game statistically came against his old team, Bucknell, as he tallied a career-high three ground balls and caused one turnover in an 11-6 Army win. Schultz is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, made the Dean's List all three semesters thus far and set to serve as a Squad Leader during West Point's BEAST Barracks training this summer.

After earning bye into the Patriot League Championship semifinal round, second-seeded Army will face No. 3 Lehigh on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at No. 1 Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex. The Mountain Hawks downed No. 6 Navy, 10-6, to advance to Friday's semifinal game.

Regular-season champion Loyola hosts No. 4 Colgate, which outlasted No. 5 Bucknell (10-9) in double-overtime on Tuesday night, in Friday's first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Friday's winners will advance to the Patriot League Championship on Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. All three games will air live on CBS Sports Network. The team to emerge will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Army enters the weekend ranked No. 14 in the Warrior Media Poll and No. 15 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll.
