WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army's all-time leading goal scorer Garrett Thul '13 will bring his game to the world stage this July at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships after being named one of 30 players to the Team USA roster on Wednesday night.

The reigning world champion U.S. Men's National Team will compete for a record 10th world title at the 2014 FIL World Championships, hosted by US Lacrosse, this July 10-19, in Denver, Colo.

Thul and former teammate Brendan Buckley '13 went through several months of training and evaluation. Thul's performance at Team USA's most recent event, the Champion Challenge at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, earned him Most Valuable Player honors and secured him a spot on the 30-man roster.

"This is such an incredible honor for me and the other 29 guys," Thul said. "I considered being invited to tryout such a humbling opportunity. To do well enough to make the team is something I'm very proud of. It's a testament to all of the coaches, teammates and mentors I've ever come into contact with.

"Playing four years at Army taught me the importance of patriotism and playing for something bigger than myself," he added. "Every time I put on that uniform with `Army' across the chest, I knew it was something special. I'll have those same feelings when putting on the Team USA jersey. It's about something more. It's about representing your country, and I cannot wait to join the rest of the team in making the United States proud."

A three-time All-American at Army, Thul holds the program record for career goals with 163, which lands second on the Patriot League's all-time goals list. A three-time Patriot League first team honoree, he is the only player in program history to record three 40-goal seasons (2010, 2011, 2013). He is one of two players in Army history to play Major League Lacrosse (Hamilton Nationals and Florida Launch) and National League Lacrosse (Philadelphia Wings).

"I couldn't be more proud of Garrett," said Army head coach Joe Alberici. "It's an honor just to be invited, but to make the team is a tremendous accomplishment. He'll be playing alongside some of the best players in the world and be counted among them. It's truly special and speaks to his level of commitment and talent. Garrett will be first-class representatives of himself, the Army lacrosse family, the Academy and the United States Army."

Alberici served as an assistant coach on the 2010 gold-medal team, while former Army All-American goalkeeper Adam Fullerton '08 represented the red, white and blue as a player that same season.

Team USA will reconvene next for training camp in Connecticut (location TBA) June 22-26 concluding with a matchup against a squad of MLL All-Stars in the MLL All-Star Game on June 26 at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. From there, the team heads to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a second training camp July 6-9 before beginning its world title defense in Denver on July 10. Ultimately, 23 of the 30 players will be selected to the active roster for the duration of the World Championship.
