WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Foley Athletic Center was buzzing with youth lacrosse on Sunday, Jan. 13, as nearly 500 players took part in the Army lacrosse team's free clinic. In its sixth year of existence, the clinic drew a record crowd to the Black Knights' state-of-the-art indoor facility.
Current Army players and coaches put the players through skill sessions and drills for more than five hours of workouts. The morning session featured players aged 12 and under and drew around 300 participants, while the afternoon session was geared towards those 13 years and up. The record turnout came thanks to an overwhelming response on the day of the clinic's announcement. Registration closed in less than 24 hours.
"It's terrific to see the fastest growing youth sport in the U.S. catching fire around this area as well," said eighth-year head coach Joe Alberici. "That fact is certainly evident in a fantastic turnout for Sunday's clinic.
"I have to compliment our own players on doing such a great job in running the clinic itself," he continued. "Community outreach is an important part of our program, and this is one way for our players to give back. It's a chance for area youngsters to learn from some top-level Division I players, who I also believe are such positive role models for those kids.
With the season opener less than a month away, the Black Knights began spring practice last week. Army returns its top two scorers from a year ago in preseason All-America selections Garrett Thul and John Glesener, while also welcoming back one of the top close defenders in the country in Brendan Buckley.
