SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Willie Faust scored his first career game-winning goal just 1:08 into Army’s first overtime test of the season, providing the Black Knights with a 4-3 Atlantic Hockey Association road victory at American International on Tuesday night at Olympia Ice Center.

Army (2-10-0, 2-7-0 AHA) took an early lead, scored once in each period and held the advantage much of the way. Showing no quit, however, the Yellow Jackets used a short-handed goal scored with less than two minutes to play to force extra time in Springfield, Mass.

“It wasn’t easy, especially late in the game, but we needed this win tonight and did everything we could to get it,” said 10th-year head coach Brian Riley. “I’m so proud of the way our guys battled through. It was a game of momentum all night; we weathered the storm and are going home with a win thanks to our resiliency and determination.”

While Faust provided heroics with his third goal of the year, junior right winger Zak Zaremba, senior captain Brian Schultz and rookie right wing C.J. Reuschlein each scored goals for the Black Knights. Army had the upper hand much of the night and held a 40-24 advantage in shots.

Alexander MacMillan scored twice for AIC, which dropped to 3-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in AHA play.

Army junior goaltender Rob Tadazak made 21 saves on the night, while A IC starter Ty Reichenbach made 36 stops.

A strong start for the Black Knights saw the visiting team out-shoot host AIC, 20-5, during a nearly penalty-free first 20 minutes. The effort paid off as for the second time in three games, as Zaremba got the Black Knights on the board with his third goal of the year 8:11 into the action. The Parma, Ohio, native took a feed from sophomore center Shane Hearn during a 3-on-2 breakaway as Army drew first blood. The 1-0 score stood at the first intermission.

Schultz proceeded to give the Black Knights a 2-0 cushion just 3:40 into the second period, netting his first goal of the year on a rebound shot. Sophomores Josh Roberts and Luke Jenkins both picked up assists on the score. Momentum shifted slightly midway through the period as Kyle Vogel headed into the box with a 5:00 major penalty, a stretch during which the Yellow Jackets got on the board. MacMillan’s power play goal at 8:03 cut the AIC deficit in half, 2-1.

While the 2-1 score stood at the second intermission, a late AIC penalty for too many men on the ice put the Black Knights on the power play for the opening 1:33 of the third. Reuschlein made the Yellow Jackets pay as he deflected in Jonathan Gehrt’s one-timer from just inside the blue line 45 seconds into the frame to stretch Army’s lead to 3-1.

AIC kept things interesting, however, as MacMillan jammed the puck under Tadazak at the 8:44 mark to trim the deficit to 3-2 approaching the midway point. The teams proceeded to play back-and-forth without a goal before the Yellow Jackets netted the improbable game-tying goal short-handed with just 1:26 remaining, forcing the first overtime period for either team this season.

The Black Knights wasted little time establishing control early in the extra session as Faust skated into the zone and put the exclamation point on Army’s second win of the season unassisted just 1:08 into the period.

Army is idle for the next 10 days until the Black Knights host Canisius for an AHA weekend series, Dec. 6 and 7, at Tate Rink.
