WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross, already assured of a bye in the upcoming Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs, scored once in the second and once in the final period to bear Army, 2-0, Saturday night in the final regular season game for both teams.
Holy Cross improved to 19-12-3 overall and 15-9-3 in league games and will be either the second or third seed in the playoffs depending on the result of the Niagara at Air Force game.
Army concludes the regular season 7-20-5 overall and 7-15-5 in league contests.
The Black Knights will be the No. 11 seed and travel to Erie, Pa., for a first-round playoff series beginning Friday against Mercyhurst.
Army goalie Rob Tadazak faced double-digit shots in each period and finished with 34 saves. He made 10 stops in the opening period, nine in the second and 15 in the final session before being pulled for an extra skater.
Holy Cross goalie Matt Ginn made 20 saves to earn the shutout.
The Black Knights, who took the long trek to Worcester, Mass., Saturday afternoon, killed two penalties in the opening period and Tadazak made 10 saves during a scoreless first session.
Holy Cross scored the game’s first goal five minutes into the second period when Adam Schmidt beat Tadazak.
Each team had two power play chances but only one goal was scored through two periods.
Holy Cross registered its second goal on the power play midway through the final period when Schmidt picked up his second of the game at the 7:23 mark.
Army will travel to Mercyhurst for the opening round of the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs. The best-of-three series will begin Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
