WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army senior Andy Starczewski scored twice, classmate Jon Bobb netted his first career multiple-point game and senior Matt Walsh made his first career appearance but it was Holy Cross who posted the win.
The Crusaders, in line for a first-round bye in the playoffs, scored five goals in the first two periods to dampen Army’s Senior Night with a 6-3 victory.
A crowd of more than 2,000 people was on hand and watched Army honor the seven players and one manager who were making their final appearance of the season at Tate Rink.
The Black Knights scored first but the Crusaders secured the victory.
Holy Cross improved to 18-12-3 overall and 14-9-3 in league games while Army fell to 7-19-5 overall and 7-14-5- in league contests.
Army received goals from Starczewski and Bobb and assists from Joe Kozlak, Josh Richards, senior John Clark and Maurice Alvarez in their fourth games in eight days. Senior Ryan Leets made 31 saves before giving way to Walsh for the final 2:20 of the contest.
Prior to the game, Army honored the seven senior players and one manager with a brief on-ice ceremony. It was the final regular season home game for Tony Kratz, Cody Ikkala, Clark, Bobb, Walsh, Starczewski, Leets and Cheyne Rocha.
Starczewski got Army off to a great start with his ninth goal of the season, scoring off a pass from Joe Kozlak, who was credited with his 10th assist.
Holy Cross tied the game with a power play goal by Karl Beckman and took its first lead on Mike McNamara’s ninth goal of the season at the 13:09 mark.
Bobb knotted the game when he scored his first collegiate goal in a scrum in front of the net. Clark registered his fifth assist and Richards his 10th.
Holy Cross again received goals from Beckman and McNamara to take a 4-2 lead and extended that advantage to 5-2 with an Erik Vos tip-in power play tally.
Shayne Stockton scored Holy Cross’ final goal four minutes into the final period.
Starczewski closed the scoring when he made a nifty move for his 10th goal of the season. Alvarez picked up his sixth assists and Bobb his second assist.
Army will conclude its regular season Saturday at Holy Cross. Face-off at the Hart Center is set for 7:05 p.m. The Black Knights will be on the road next weekend when the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs gets underway. The best-of three-series against an opponent to be determined will begin Friday.
