SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Zak Zaremba scored the lone Army goal early in the second period of a 2-1 road loss at American International in the first game of an Atlantic Hockey Association weekend series at Olympia Ice Center Friday night. The Black Knights will host the Yellow Jackets in a rematch tomorrow night.

Army held the advantage in shots (36-31) and face-offs (37-31). Making his third career start in goal, freshman Parker Gahagen made 29 saves and played all but the final seconds of the game. All three goals of the game were scored at even strength as both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.

AIC gifted the Black Knights three of their four power play chances in the opening period, off which Army would not score. The road team had its chances, however, and outshot AIC 16-7 in the first 20 minutes.

The Yellow Jackets wasted little time jumping on the board 1:59 into the second period on a Jon Puskar goal. Fifteen minutes of scoreless hockey ensued before Zaremba’s fourth goal of the season broke the silence with 2:47 remaining in the frame and leveled the score at 1-1 heading into the locker room. Senior captain Brian Schultz and sophomore forward Joe Kozlak earned assists on the play, helping shift momentum into Army’s favor.

AIC proceeded to retake the lead, 2-1, early in the third when Alex MacMillan’s deflection slipped past Gahagen 4:08 into the action. The Black Knights had their chances down the stretch, but could not come away with the equalizer. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets held a 16-10 advantage in shots in the final frame.

AIC’s Hunter Leisner played all 60:00 and made 35 saves on the night.

The Black Knights return to the friendly confines of Tate Rink tomorrow night as the teams go at it again at 7:05 p.m. at West Point.
