WEST POINT, N.Y.  – RIT scored twice in the third period and then held off a late Army charge to beat the Black Knights, 6-5, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at Tate Rink.

Army scored two goals with less than two minutes remaining to cut the deficit but ran out of time.

The Tigers netted two power play goals and improved to 7-10-4 overall and 5-6-3 in league games.

Brian Schultz, Andrew O’Leary, Andy Starczewski, Thane Heller and Josh Richards scored goals for Army, which fell to 7-11-3 overall and 7-6-3.

Starczewski, Richards, Schultz, John Clark, Josh Roberts and Mac Lalor collected assists for the Black Knights who were coming off a 3-3 overtime tie at Air Force last weekend.

RIT goalie Josh Watson made 25 saves while Army’s Rob Tadazak turned away 32 shots.

RIT wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. After Army failed to clear the puck, Chris Saracino took a shot on goal. Tadazak made the initial save but Jeff Smith poked home the rebound for his seventh goal of the season 62 seconds into the game.

Army had the game’s first power play six minutes into the contest when the Tigers were whistled for cross checking but knotted the game with an even-strength tally.

Roberts was moved to the first line prior to the game and collected his third career point with an assist off of a pretty pass to Schultz. It was the second goal of the season for Schultz and the third assist for Roberts.

Two minutes later, the Tigers went back on top on a Ben Lynch tally.

RIT then made it a 3-1 lead with a power play score, after Army was called for cross checking. Nolan Descoteaux got the goal for a two-goal RIT lead after the first 20 minutes.

Starczewski ended a personal goal-scoring draught and cut the Army deficit in half. He forced a turnover near center ice, beat a defender and trickled the puck past Watson to make it a 3-2 contest with eight minutes spent in the second period. It was the sixth goal of the season for Starczewski, the team’s leading scorer, and his first since the Bentley game on Nov. 29, a stretch of nine games.

RIT extended its lead to two a second time with a 5-on-3 score. Army was whistled for two high sticking penalties nine seconds apart and Mike Colavecchia picked up his ninth goal of the season for a 4-2 RIT lead.

Army again answered, this time with just 20 seconds left in the second session. Lalor collected the puck in the Army end, sent a long pass up ice to Starczewski who slid the puck to Richards for this fourth goal of the season. It was the team-leading 13th assist for Starczewski and the ninth for Lalor.

RIT put the game away with two third period goals as Jeff Smith and Andrew Miller collected scores.

Army added a late score in the final period when O’Leary tipped in a shot by Clark. It was the second consecutive game with a goal for O’Leary and the fourth assist for Clark.

The Black Knights closed the gap to one with eight seconds remaining when Heller blasted in a pass from Schultz for his team-leading eight goal of the season. Kozlak started the play for his sixth assist while Schultz registered his second.

Army will conclude its regular season series with RIT Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7:05 p.m. at Tate Rink. The game is sold-out. Army will host Canadian rival Royal Military College in an exhibition game on Jan. 26. That game has also been announced as a sell-out.
