Army's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Eugene F. "Boo" Corrigan Jr., joined over one hundred supporters of Army Gymnastics at a ceremony held at the Lou Gross Sports Center on 28 January 2012. It marked the end of a five year campaign to raise an endowment for the Gymnastics Team and dedicate an impressive plaque with names of major donors of the successful effort. In remarks to the attendees, Corrigan had high praise for the organization of the campaign, pointing out that it will serve as an example for the other 24 USMA intercollegiate teams if they choose to raise their own endowments.
In his remarks following the Athletic Director, Doug VanEveren, whose service as our Campaign Director was the key to raising more than the $1 million goal, spoke of the accomplishments by the gymnastics team since its inception in 1926. He noted not only the successes of Army gymnasts in intercollegiate competition, but in the subsequent success team members have had after graduation both in and out of the Army.
I was afforded the time to say a few words also, and took that opportunity to thank all those who served on the Campaign Cabinet. I pointed out that the five years in which we solicited contributions was a very difficult period to raise money, and took a good deal of effort on their part. Over the years, the Cabinet usually met by phonecon once a month, and it was not unusual to have one or two participating members deployed in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Over the years I have participated in many fund raising efforts, but this one was simply unique.
As the campaign ends, the Cabinet met for the final time on January 28th. Our main topic was the future of the endowment. Although the $1 million plus we raised was our goal, that amount will have to continue to increase in future years if we are ever to get to the point where the endowment would cover the costs incurred each year. Our decision at the final Cabinet meeting was to establish a successor organization called the Endowment Committee which will continue to grow the endowment. For all of you who have been generous and loyal supporters of the team, we would like to say many thanks for your past efforts, but please consider Army Gymnastics when you make your annual charitable contributions. If any of you would like to join the new Endowment Committee or have suggestions on how to grow the endowment, please contact Coach VanEveren.
As my final act as Chairman of the Campaign Cabinet, I would like to thank all of you who made this campaign successful, and for this opportunity to once again serve our Alma Mater, West Point.
Major General (USA-Ret) Neal Creighton `53
