Black-Gold Meet Results
WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Just prior to the Thanksgiving break, the Army gymnastics team competed in its annual preseason scrimmage with freshman Jesse Glenn capturing the final two events and sharing medalist honors in another to lift the Black team to a tight 238.6-238.4 decision over the Gold squad.
Glenn, one of the nation's top recruits and a USA Junior National Team member, put forth an outstanding performance in claiming all-around with a score of 82.7. He captured individual titles on parallel bars (14.2) and high bar (13.4), along with sharing the title on vault with junior Kip Webber of the Gold team as both posted identical scores of 14.6. Glenn was also runner-upon on pommel horse (13.6) and still rings (13.8).
Webber, a two-time NCAA qualifier, placed first on floor exercise (14.4) and still rings (14.8) competing for the Gold team. Senior Garrek Hojan-Clark, who has ranked among the nation's leaders on pommel horse the past three years, captured his signature event with a 14.6 as a member of the Gold team in rounding out the individual winners.
Senior Nicholas Fettinger of the Black team, junior Ian Howard and senior Gregory Fearnley of the Gold squad finished second on parallel bars (13.2), floor exercise (14.3) and high bar (13.0), respectively.
Senior team captain Ikaika Jakub of the Gold squad turned in third-place showings on still rings (13.2), vault (14.4) and parallel bars (13.1). Also earning the bronze were senior Jared Breeden (Black) on floor exercise (13.9), sophomore Connnor Venrick (Black) on pommel horse (13.0) and freshman Chris Short (Gold) on high bar (12.8).
The Black and Gold squads split the six team events, but the Black team's dominance on parallel bars (40.3-36.5) proved the turning point of the meet.
Army ushers in the 2013 campaign on Friday, Jan. 12, when the team travels to University Park, Pa., to take on a Penn State squad that finished third at last year's NCAA Championships.
