2014 Schedule

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army gymnastics schedule in 2014 is a challenging one as the Black Knights are on the road for the majority of their meets. Just three of eight dual matches will be held in the friendly confines of Gross Sports Center, and five of six championship formats are scattered among the states of Texas, Virginia, Maryland and Michigan.

The roster is comprised of nine upperclassmen and 12 underclassmen with senior Nick Miles providing leadership as the team captain. Among the top returnees are senior Kip Webber, a three-time NCAA participant, and sophomore Jesse Glenn, who was enjoying a spectacular freshman year before an injury during spring break kept him out of postseason competition.

Army opens its season for the 11th straight year taking on perennial powerhouse Penn State with the Nittany Lions hosting the opener for the sixth consecutive year when the teams meet on Saturday, Jan. 11. Penn State placed fourth at last year's NCAA Championships, and is tied for fifth place with Illinois in the GymInfo preseason poll, where Army lists 15th.

The Black Knights host their annual West Point Open on Friday (Jan. 17) and Saturday (Jan.18) at Christl Arena, and will be looking to duplicate or improve upon last year's runner-up showing, along with challenging for individual titles. Glenn became the first Black Knight in the history of the Open to capture the all-around title last year, and this year will be among the top contenders in his bid to defend his crown.

Following a week off, the Black Knights continue on the tournament circuit when they head to Houston, Texas, to participate in the All-Academy Championships with Air Force and Navy on Saturday, Feb. 1. Army finished runner-up to Air Force last year, its highest placing since 2007, and will once again be a contender for the title. The Falcons were picked 14th in the preseason poll.

Service academy rivals Air Force and Navy continue to highlight the month of February. Following the All-Academy Championships the first weekend in February, Army has dual matches against Navy and Air Force the following two weeks. The Black Knights head to Annapolis, Md., on Feb. 8 where they will be looking to post their second straight "Star" win over the Midshipmen in their first ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) match of the season. The following Friday, Feb. 14, Army host Air Force at 6 p.m. in its first of two meets being held at Gross Sports Center.

Two days later, Army heads to Massachusetts to take on conference rival Springfield College on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. Following that meet, Army will be idle while a few members of the squad will be looking to compete at the Winter Cup being held Feb. 20-22 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Black Knights close out February hosting defending ECAC Champion Temple, picked 12th preseason, Friday (Feb. 28) evening at 6 p.m., followed two days later by their regular-season home finale against Springfield on Sunday (March 2) at 1 p.m.

Army heads to Virginia for a conference triangular hosted by William & Mary, to include Temple, on March 9 at1 p.m. in the regular-season finale in preparation for the postseason.

The Black Knights will spend the next two weekends in Annapolis, Md., starting with USA Gymnastics College Championships (March 21-22) and the ECAC Championships (March 28-29) being hosted by Navy. Army did not compete at the College Nationals last year, but a strong showing could be the springboard that moves them into contender status heading into the ECAC Championships the following week.

Army hopes to be numbered among the participants at the NCAA Championships being held in Ann Arbor, Mich., in April with the three-day tournament opening with the NCAA Qualifier on April 10th. Army has been represented at the NCAAs every year under coach Doug Van Everen, who is in his 24th season.

Last year, senior pommel horse specialist Garrek Hojan-Clark advanced to the NCAA individual finals, and with talent of the returnees, along with the newcomers, Army expects to be well represented again in 2014.
