July 4, 2014

Each weekday this summer a new cadet-athlete will be featured in Getting to Know, a Q&A series where Army fans can read about their favorite players. Today's cadet is senior on the gymnastics team, Connor Venrick.

NAME:
Connor Venrick

HOMETOWN:
Centennial, Colo.

MAJOR:
Life Sciences

DESCRIBE COACH VAN EVEREN:
He knows what needs to get done and how it to do it. He has a sense of humor that is unique. Whenever he is telling a joke, he never laughs at it. The only regular thing that makes coach laugh is when Jeremy Cahill or Sam Kusnitz do something stupid (normally involving a trampoline or a Spiderman outfit). Coach is the disciplined father of Army gymnastics, just trying to stay sane with so many gymnast sons.

FAVORITE ATHLETE:
David Durante

FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM:
Denver Broncos

BEST PART OF ARMY GYMNASTICS:
The best part of Army Gymnastics is the energy and excitement that is generated when we are at meets.

FAVORITE VENUE TO COMPETE IN:
I like competing at Air Force Academy since all of my friends at home come to cheer us to victory.

OPPONENT MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO COMPETING AGAINST:
NAVY of course!

HOW ARE YOU SPENDING YOUR SUMMER:
I am AS1 for SGR 1, then I will be studying to take the MCAT in July. In August, I will be at Ft. Carson for CTLT in a medical service unit.

TO RELAX, I:
Watch one of my many TV shows that I follow.

FAVORITE MEAL:
I really enjoy a cup of homemade chili with some sourdough bread and a coke.

FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: Jamaica

MY IPOD HAS:
Almost every type of music besides rap and screamo.

FAVORITE PART OF ARMY MEETS:
The best part of the meet is near the end where our energy is dying down. Inevitably, someone will motivate everyone to rally behind the team and get pumped up again.

FAVORITE PART OF WEST POINT: The opportunities that West Point gives us are offered nowhere else. I could not have jumped out of an airplane for any other school. Additionally, graduates of West Point will do anything for current cadets, and West Point graduates are always part of a giant network.

DESCRIBE ARMY GYMNASTICS: It is a crazy rollercoaster, with its ups and downs. Some parts of the year are exciting and amazing, while others are stressful and aggravating. Yet, no matter what happens, the year always ends on a high note and with the goal of being better next year. We always strive for a higher standard, and we reach that standard every year.  The team really is like a giant family. We are all brothers, and like brothers, we do not always get along. However, we will protect and stand up for each other no matter what.

ARMY'S TEAM MVP IN 2015 WILL BE:
Jesse Glenn

ARMY WILL HAVE HOW MANY ECAC CHAMPIONS IN 2015:
We will have at least 3 ECAC champions in 2015, but the team will place first.

WHAT GYMNAST WILL SURPRISE PEOPLE IN 2015:
I believe that Zachary Mancini will rise to become a leading pommel horse competitor

WHO IS TOP GYMNAST ON TEAM:
Jesse Glenn

WHO IS FUNNIEST GYMNAST ON TEAM:
Zachary Mancini

WHICH GYMNAST IS MOST LIKLEY TO BECOME A GENERAL:
Scott Warner

WHAT TEAM THAT IS NOT ON OUR SCHEDULE WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY AND WHY:
I think that going against Michigan would be a lot of fun and would motivate all of us to go harder in the gym.

I FOLLOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ON TWITTER:
Zero. I do not even have a Twitter account.
