Gymnastics Team Finish Fourth In Final Home Meet of the Season

 WEST POINT, N.Y. Army’s gymnastics team posted a 317.5  hosting a quadrangular Saturday evening at Gross Sports Center in its final home meet of the season. No. 11 Iowa outpointed the field with a 339.95 followed by No. 16 Springfield (328.65), No. 13 William & Mary (328.25) and the No. 18  Black Knights.

Army junior Ty Smith finished fifth in the all-around scoring behind a season-high 80.60 with classmate Justin Sappington right behind him in sixth place (80.00) competing for the first time in all six events. Smith also turned in a season best 13.85 in floor exercise, where he finished sixth, along with placing seventh on pommel horse (13.2) followed by Jonathan Grey who tied for 10th place (13.0).

Iowa, a member of the Big Ten, captured five of the six team events floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault and high bar with William & Mary claiming parallel bars. The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 7 in the country on vault, No. 9 on floor exercise and 13th on still rings, while William & Mary is No. 11 on pommel horse.

William & Mary’s Derek Gygax, ranked No. 12 in the country in all-around, claimed medalist honors with an 82.6, nipping  Springfield’s Ty Evans by .15. 
The Hawkeyes had four of the individual winners with Geoff Reins a double winner on vault (16.25) and floor exercise (15.40), where he is ranked sixth and eighth nationally. Jacob Swafford rounded out Iowa’s winners finishing first on pommel horse (12.55).

Springfield’s Matthew Bolognese was first on still rings (14.95) and Evans won high bar (14.05) in rounding out the individual medalists.

The Black Knights head to Temple next Saturday for a triangular with the Owls and Navy in closing out their regular season.
