DALLAS, TEXAS Joey Cave, Sam Walenz and Jay Twitty all fired even-par 72s on the third and final round of play to move Army into second place at the 14th annual Service Academy Classic in Dallas, Texas. The Black Knights placed second for the fifth time in the last six years, finishing 11 strokes back of Air Force.
Army began the round in third place, seven strokes behind Air Force and one shot back of Navy, and was able to climb into second place. The Black Knights shot their best round of the tournament (364) to finish with a 54-hole composite of 1105. Air Force captured its 12th consecutive tournament title with a threeround score of 1094. Navy came in third, sixth strokes behind Army.
Walenz finished third with an even-par 216 for the three rounds. Cave posted a fourth-place showing after carding a 72 in today’s round, giving him a 54-hole total of 219. Matt Hanlon posted a solid round of 73 to finish sixth with a composite score of 222. Walenz, Cave and Hanlon were named to the All-Service Academy Golf Classic Team.
Twitty signed for his best round of the tournament (72) in the final round for a three-round score of 228. Mark Garrison combined for a 231, Adam Renfroe carded a three-round 235, Patrick Beverly finished with a 237, and David Padgalskas finished with a 237.
Air Force’s Whitney Thomas won the individual title after carding a final round 66 for a three-round total 210.
The Black Knights concluded the fall slate at the Buffalo Rock Southern Showdown Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. on Oct. 30-31.
