WEST POINT, N.Y. - Matt Philie, the first Army golfer to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, has been named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
Philie finished third, just two strokes behind the leader at the Patriot League Golf Championships, Saturday and Sunday at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton, N.Y.
A native of West Friendship, Md., Philie shot a 54-hole total of 224 and helped Army to a third-place finish at the league championships. In addition to being named Rookie of the Year, Philie was also named to the All Patriot League first team after rounds of 72-76-75.
The Black Knights concluded their 2009-10 season by shooting a two-day total of 912. A final round 301 vaulted the Black Knights into third place, finishing just behind Lafayette and Lehigh and in front of Navy and defending champion Bucknell.
Philie played in all nine events in his freshman season and placed in the top 10 on four occasions.
