WEST POINT, N.Y. Matt Krembel was second and William Park ninth as the Army golf team finished third as the Patriot League Golf Championships concluded, Sunday at a warm and sunny West Point Golf Course.
Bucknell fired a 292 in the final round to earn the team championship with an 884, five strokes in front of Navy and seven in front of Army. Bucknell earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Bucknell’s Andrew Cohen shot a 69 to win the event and earn Player of the Year honors with a championship total of 208.
Army head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger, Navy coach Pat Owen and Bucknell coach Jim Cotner all shared Coach of the Year honors. The three tied in a vote among league coaches.
Krembel, a sophomore, fired a final-round 75 to finish at 216 in second-place while earning first-team All-Patriot League honors. Park, a freshman, shot a four-over-par 74 and finished at 227 in a tie for ninth and was named to the second-team All-Patriot League.
The Bison were in third place following the first 36 holes of competition and used a strong final round to claim their third league championship. Cohen is the fourth individual champion from Bucknell.
The Black Knights were coming off a win at the Mount St. Mary’s Invitational and a third-place finish at the Peacock Invitational and led by a stroke over Navy after the first day of play but shot a 303 in the final 18 holes on the way to a third-place finish.
Krembel, who won his last two tournaments, led the way for the Black Knights with a 216, followed by Park at 227. Senior Sam Walenz and junior James Raymond were one stroke behind Park and in a tie for 11th. Walenz shot a 76 in the final round and Raymond a 78. Sophomore Wes Carver and junior Mark Garrison tied for 25th at 235. Carver shot a 79 and Garrison an 83 over the final 18 holes.
Tournament Notes: Army wore its “black special” for the final round with black shorts and black shirts with white piping. The team members who served as volunteers opted for black and white shirts and khaki shorts ... Superintendent Lt. Gen. Franklin Hagenbeck and Athletics Director Kevin Anderson were among the crowd ... Bucknell’s Andrew Cohen had the only round under-par on Sunday, a 69 ... Army head coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger was named the Coach of the Year for the fourth time ... Matt Krembel repeated as an All-Patriot League selection.
