JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Junior Robby Hill carded a one-under par 71 to lead Army in the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club Friday afternoon. The Black Knights wrapped up the first day in 12th place of 14 teams, including six squads currently ranked in the Golfweek Top 50.
Hill got off to a slow start, finishing the front nine at two-over par, but three birdies on the back nine dropped him into red numbers for the round. He will tee off on Saturday tied for 15th place in the 78-golfer field.
Sophomore Marcus Plunkett and freshman Peter Kim are both tied for 41st at two-over par, while plebe Justin Pagila carded a five-over 77. Sophomore Eric Peng rounded out the Black Knights’ competitors, shooting 81.
Army is nine strokes ahead of Penn State and 31 shots clear of Villanova. The Black Knights are just one shot behind 14th-ranked Virgina and 47th-ranked Missouri, and need to make up just eight strokes to move into the top five with the likes of 26th-ranked Memphis. The host team, East Tennessee State, leads the field a 11-under par, seven shots ahead of No. 13 Virginia Tech. ETSU’s Rhys Pugh leads the field, carding a 66 on Friday.
The 54-hole event continues Saturday with the second round. The Black Knights are scheduled to tee off beginning at 9:30 a.m.
