VICTOR, Idaho - Anthony Kim fired a hole-in-one and a five-under-par 67 during the final round as the Army golf team finished sixth at the inaugural Battle in the Tetons, Tuesday at Teton Springs Resort.

Kim, a sophomore, posted the best score of his collegiate career and finished tied for fourth at the par-72, 7,373-yard Headwaters Golf Club.

Army, playing in its first event of the season, shot a final-round 292 to place sixth at the nine-team event. Army opened play with a 298 but struggled to a 308 during Monday's second round. The team then responded with a 292 on Tuesday to vault three places in the team standings.

"We were definitely a little sloppy and our wedge game was a little rusty," said Army golf coach Brian Watts. "We struggled on the greens on Monday and our scores indicated that. On Tuesday, we definitely played a little better and stayed patient. It was our first tournament of the year and we're pleased with how we progressed. For us, it's about getting better and where we need to be for the end of the season. We feel like we're away ahead of where we were a year ago."

Kim opened with a one-under-par 71 on Monday, shot a 76 in the afternoon and then secured his seventh career top-10 showing with a two-under-par championship score. Kim posted Army's first hole-in-one since 2004 when he used an eight-iron to ace the par-3, 170-yard fourth hole. He later drained a pitching wedge from 130 yards out in the fairway of No. 6.

"Anthony Kim was the story," said Watts. "He made a hole-in-one, chipped in once and holed out twice. I would characterize that as a great day on the links."

Utah Valley won the tournament with an 866, followed by Southern Utah (874) and host Weber State (882). Mason Casper of Utah Valley won medalist honors with a 202, a 14-under-par score.

While Kim's hole-in-one was the shot of the day, Watts was pleased with the improvement between the second and third rounds. Sophomore Brandon Baerwaldt shot his best career collegiate round with a 73 to finish tied for 33rd. Baerwaldt had rounds of 79 and 77 on Monday.

Freshman Robby Hill, making his collegiate debut, overcame an illness and finished 52nd with score of 83-83-76--242. Junior Matt Philie tied for 28th. He opened with an even-par 72 and posted a 226 for the championship. Senior Ethan Johnson tied for 39th with a 231 (76-79-76).

Army will return to competition Sept. 16-17 at the Bucknell Fall Invitational at the Bucknell Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa.
