PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. - The Army golf team opened its spring tournament schedule with a 10th place finish at the Triumph at Pauma Valley, Tuesday at par-71, 7,007-yard Pauma Valley Country Club.
The Black Knights lowered their score in each round and placed 10th of 11 teams. Army shot a 320 and 316 during the 36-hole opening day and concluded the tournament with a 314 to finish at 950 for the tournament, two strokes behind ninth-place Manitoba.
Host San Francisco won the event with an 865 after rounds of 280-295-290. Central Arkansas was second followed by British Columbia, Austin Peay and Bowling Green. Ji Hwan Park of the host school shot a 214 to win the individual championship, two strokes in front of Jack Wesche from British Columbia and three in front of Central Arkansas’ Josh Sims.
Brandon Baerwaldt and William Park led Army and tied for 40th. Anthony Kim was 48th, Eric Park 59th and David Marx 61st.
William Park began his tournament with an 80 and then put together rounds of 77 and 78 for a 235 to tie for 40th. Baerwaldt opened with a 78 and then shot 77 and 80.
Kim had one of Army’s lowest rounds in the first 18 holes with a 78 and followed that with an 84 and 77 and was tied for 48th.
Eric Park put together a pair of 79s in his final two rounds. After opening with an 89, the junior rebounded with back-to-back 79s and finished at 247 for the championship, in 59th place.
Marx, a junior, was consistent all three rounds, shooting 84-83-83 for a 250 total and tie for 61st.
Army will continue its West coast swing and play at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. Thursday and Friday at Omni National, site of last year’s NCAA Regional where the Black Knights finished 12th.
The University of Arizona will host the 12-team event with 36 holes on Thursday and 18 on Friday at the par-72, 7,094-yard layout. In addition to Army and Arizona, the tournament includes BYU, Hawaii, Memphis, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, San Diego State, SMU, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
