ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - The Army golf team began its spring schedule on Sunday, shooting an 11-over par 299 in the first round of the Gary Freeman Invitational hosted by Bethune-Cookman at Halifax Plantation Golf Club. The Black Knights' first-day performance was good enough for second place, eight shots behind the host Wildcats.
Army placed four of its competitors among the top 17 players, led by Eric Peng's 1-over 73. Peng enters Monday's final round tied for third place, three shots behind the leader, Bethune-Cookman's Leon Fricker.
Justin Pagila is in sixth place after carding a 74, while Robby Hill is tied for seventh one-shot behind. Marcus Plunkett posted a 77 in his first spring round, good enough for a tie for 14th place. Peter Kim rounded out Army's fivesome, shooting an 80 to tie for 27th place.
Harrison Florence shot a 5-over 77 competing as an individual.
The Black Knights are two shots clear of third place Savannah State. Army beings final round competition at 8 a.m. Monday.
