Alex Williams, a two-time captain and graduate of Oregon State University, is in his
first season as Army's assistant golf coach.
A four-year member of the Beavers' golf team, Williams was a three-time Pac-10
All Academic Team selection, an Academic All-American, the Pac-10 Men's Golf
Scholar Athlete of the Year and a seven-time selection to the OSU Honor Roll
before earning his degree in history.
An active member of the
Student Athletic Advisory Committee at Oregon State, Williams won the Northwest
Winter Shootout at Langdon Farms Golf Course in 2008 with a one-under-par 142,
shot a six-under 66 at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate in 2006 - one of three
66s -- and a seven-under-par 209 at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
"Alex was the perfect choice
to be our assistant coach," said Watts. "I got to know this young man very well
as his coach for four years at Oregon State. His passion for the game, skills
as a teacher and abilities as a recruiter will help to bring us closer to our
goals of winning tournaments and the Patriot League and competing in NCAA
postseason events."
Following his graduation from
Oregon State, Williams served as a volunteer assistant golf coach at Skyview
High School in Vancouver, Wash., and traveled and taught English as a foreign
language in Peru for seven months.
A camp counselor for OSU
Men's Golf Camp, Williams will have a diverse role with the Army program. In
addition to individual work with players, he will have a large role in
recruiting and on-course management.
"I am very excited for this
opportunity," said Williams' "Coaching golf at the collegiate level is a dream
job for me and the opportunity to learn from coach Watts and work with the
great young men at West Point makes it even better. I'm looking forward to
working with the guys and helping them accomplish their goals."
Williams resides in
Cornwall-on-Hudson.
