Academics and athletics pay off for Army FB

Nov. 13, 2013

Hayden Tippett sat in his "Critical Thought" class at West Point and listened as he was briefed about international opportunities for cadets this past summer.

Tippett, a fullback on Army's football team, didn't waste any time expressing interest. That day, Tippett contacted an officer in charge and started the application process.

Once approved, Tippett's destination was Ghana. Tippett taught math and information technology to 54 fourth-graders for three weeks in the morning. In the afternoon, Tippett built a domain-name server and file-transfer server for the primary school's sister college.

"It completely reconstructed my idea of the formal education process and the limits of the classroom," said Tippett, a West Point senior.

Tippett's efforts were rewarded Tuesday morning when he was named one of 12 finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy. The trophy, named for former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, is awarded to the college football player who combines community service with academics and athletics.
