Postgame Notes - Army vs. Rutgers

POSTGAME NOTES -- ARMY VS. RUTGERS (11-9-07)

TEAM NOTES:
Army and Rutgers battled for the 34th time on Friday night and 20th time at Michie Stadium. Army now leads the all-time series by an 18-16 margin. Rutgers notched its fourth straight series victory with Friday’s 41-6 decision.

The Black Knights suffered their first loss at home this season, dropping to 3-1 at Michie Stadium this fall.

Army drew a season-high crowd of 39.073 to rainy Michie Stadium on Friday, the Black Knights’ first sellout since Nov. 6, 2004, when the Black Knights hosted Air Force. It marked Army’s largest home attendance since that affair.

Army lost the opening coin toss for the fifth straight game and for the eighth time in 10 games this season.

Friday marked just the seventh night game (kickoff after 6 p.m.) in the history of Michie Stadium and only the third Friday night affair at West Point. Army is now 0-3 in Friday night contests at West Point and 4-3 in night home games overall. It marked the Black Knights’ second night contest at Michie Stadium this season. Army defeated Tulane in overtime back in October.

Army failed to score an offensive touchdown against Rutgers on Friday. The Black Knights have not scored an offensive touchdown in their last six quarters of action after getting shut out in the second half against Air Force last week.

The Black Knights committed five turnovers (4 lost fumbles, 1 interception) and had a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. Rutgers parlayed two of Army’s miscues into a pair of touchdowns.

OFFENSIVE NOTES:
Senior WR Jeremy Trimble, who became Army’s career receptions leader earlier this season against Central Michigan, extended his consecutive games streak with at least one reception to 20 games dating back to last year. Trimble has pulled down at least two passes in each of those 20 contests. Trimble stretched his school record career reception total to 164 with three receptions on Friday.

Jeremy Trimble finished with 32 receiving yards on three receptions. Trimble moved to within 121 receiving yards of the Black Knights’ career record. He is only the second player in Army history to record more than 2,000 career receiving yards (2,158).

Sophomore QB Carson Williams moved to within four completions of eighth place on the Top 10 of Army’s career completions list Friday, hitting on 5 of 16 pass attempts versus Rutgers. Williams currently holds down ninth place on the list with 169 career completions. Carson remained inseventh place on Army’s single-season completion list (113).

Sophomore RB Ian Smith registered a career-high 53 yards rushing on just three attempts. He ripped off a season-long 25-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

Army was held to just three offensive plays on eight different possessions by Rutgers’ defense. Army did not sustain a drive of longer than five plays on the night. The Black Knights’ longest offensive drive in distance measured just 23 yards before Army totaled 64 offensive yards on its final possession.

DEFENSIVE NOTES:
Junior DB Josh Mitchell returned his first career interception 65 yards for a touchdown accounting for Army’s only points of the night. Mitchell notched his fourth career start and first of the season, filling in for injured DB John Laird, who was lost for the year after suffering a knee injury against Air Force.

Josh Mitchell’s interception return for a touchdown marked the second time Army has returned a pickoff for a score this season. Senior LB Brian Chmura also returned his first career interception for a touchdown this season, accomplishing the feat against Boston College.

Senior SS Caleb Campbell paced Army with 12 tackles. It marked Campbell’s third double-digit tackle performance of the season and the 10th of his career.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES:
Army junior K Adam DeMarco misfired on the Black Knights’ lone extra-point attempt. It snapped a string of 63 consecutive made extra points by Army placekickers dating back to 2005.

Senior P-K Owen Tolson averaged 43.0 yards on seven punts. His long kick was 50 yards on Friday.
