WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army freshman LB Geoffrey Bacon was named the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Vanderbilt last Saturday. Bacon, making his first career start, led the Black Knights with a career-high 13 tackles and returned his first career interception 70 yards for a touchdown.
Bacon entered the game with 13 tackles and matched his season total against the Commodores. He also registered an assisted tackle for loss and broke up a pass.
The Milwaukee native is the third Army player to earn an Independent Player of the Week Award. Junior QB Trent Steelman was named the Offensive Player of the Week following Army's win over Northwestern, and senior PK Alex Carlton earned the special teams honor after the Black Knights' victory versus Tulane.
The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions' coverage markets.
