SATURDAY’S HEADLINES
► Army plays its first road game in nearly a month when it travels to Ypsilanit, Mich., to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Black Knights have not played outside the confines of Michie Stadium since a loss at Wake Forest on Sept. 22. Army is in the midst of a stretch of five homes games in six weeks.
► The Black Knights are coming off a 31-17 loss to Kent State. Last week’s game started a three-game run of opponents from the Mid-American Conference. The Black Knights are 0-2 so far this season against MAC foes (Northern Illinois, Kent State), and have lost six in a row against league members.
► Army is making its third trip to Rynearson Stadium in the past four seasons. The Black Knights opened the 2009 and 2010 campaigns in Ypsilanti. EMU played at West Point in 2008 and are scheduled to make another visit to Michie Stadium on Oct. 12, 2013.
► Despite rushing for more than 70 yards below their season average against the Golden Flashes, the Black Knights enter this weekend’s game as the No. 1 ranked rushing offense in the nation. Army is averaging 385.17 yards per game on the ground, better than 20 yards per game than its next closest competitor, Air Force. The Black Knights have run for at least 300 yards in four of their six games, cracking the 400-yard mark three times, including a 515-yard outburst against Boston College.
► Junior RB Raymond Maples was held to less than 100 yards for only the second time this season. Despite a season-low 80 yards against Kent State, Maples still ranks 10th in the nation with 125.17 rushing yards per contest.
► Maples has rushed for 751 yards through six games. He is just 249 yards shy of becoming the third Army player to reach the 1,000-yard mark in back-to-back seasons. Mike Mayweather (1988-90) and Carlton Jones (2004-05) are the only two Black Knights with at least two 1,000-yard seasons. At his current pace, Maples would break Army’s single-season rushing record (1,339 yards) and become the first Black Knight to reach the 1,500-yard mark.
► The Army passing game had its most productive day of the season with 132 yards versus Kent State. It was the team’s highest passing total since a 149-yard effort against the Golden Flashes on Nov. 13, 2010. Army’s yardage was split evenly between senior Trent Steelman and freshman A.J. Schurr. Schurr threw his first career touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
► The Army defense gave up a season-low 367 yards against Kent State. It was the first time this season an Army foe did not gain at least 420 yards of total offense. The Black Knights limited KSU to just 48 offensive snaps and a 1-for-9 showing on third down, but could not overcome the Golden Flashes’ big play ability. Kent State had five plays from scirmmage that covered at least 20 yards, including an 87-yard touchdown run.

A WIN VS. EASTERN MICHIGAN WOULD …
► Improve Army’s record to 5-0 all-time against the Eagles.
► Run Army’s record to 3-0 in Ypsilanti.
► Snap Army’s 10-game losing streak in games played away from West Point.
► End the Black Knights’ six-game losing streak versus Mid-American Conference opponents.
► Push Rich Ellerson’s record to 3-0 against the Eagles.
► Be the Black Knights’ fourth straight win against foes with the nickname Eagles.
► Improve Army’s October record to 6-5 since 2010.
► Be Head Coach Rich Ellerson’s 17th win at West Point (16-27)

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
► Eastern Michigan is coached by Ron English, who is in his fourth season in Ypsilanti. The 2011 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, guided the Eagles to a 6-6 record last season, snapping the program’s streak of 15 straight losing seasons. English’s background is on the defensive side of the ball. He served as defensive coordinator at Louisville in 2008 after a two-year run coordinating Michigan’s stop unit that included a Rose Bowl appearance. English spent his first three years in Ann Arbor as the secondary coach after working in a similar capacity at San Diego State (1996-97) and Arizona State (1998-2002).
► The Eagles are coming off a 52-47 home loss to Toledo last Saturday. The two teams combined for 1,279 yards, including 624 by Eastern Michigan. The Eagles had a chance to win on the game’s final play, but a desperation heave into the end zone fell incomplete. Sophomore running back Bronson Hill made his first start of the season and accumulated 283 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries. His yardage totla was the highes by any player in the nation so far this season. Tyler Benz completed 18-of-27 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Garrett Hoskins caught a team-high seven passes for 103 yards, while Tyreese Russell was on the receiving end of both Benz’s scoring tosses. Defensively, Pudge Cotton and Blake Poole had 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.
► Offensively, Eastern Michigahn is averaging 20.7 points and 324.8 yards per game. The Eagles boast a balanced offense, gaining 168.5 yards per game passing and 156.3 yards per game on the ground. Hill is the team’s leading rusher at 72.6 yards per game and five touchdowns. He is averaging 10.4 yards per carry. Alex Gillett, who started the first three games at quarterback, is next on the list with 175 yards and two scores.
► Benz has started the last three outings under center. He has completed 45 of his 84 pass attempts (.536) for 614  yards and four touchdowns while being intercepted three times. Gillett is 35-for-76 (.461) for 397 yards and four scores. Hoskins has been the Eagles’ top receiving threat with 23 receptions for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Demarius Reed and Tyreese Russell have also caught a pair of touchdown passes.
► On defense, the Eagles are allowing 39.67 points and 515.5 yards per contest. Defensive back Donald Coleman and linebacker Bryan Palli are the team’s leading tacklers with 60 stops each. Palli also boasts a team-high 4.5 tackles for loss. Kalonji Kashama paces the Eagles with 3.0 quarterback sacks. Pudge Cotton has a pair of interceptions and recovered one fumble.
► The Eastern Michigan special teams are  highligted by punter Jay Krutz. His 44.59 yards per boot average ranks 13th in the nation, and the unit’s 42.18 net punt average is seventh best in the nation. Kody Fulkerson and Dylan Mulder have split the kicking duties. Fulkerson is 0-for-1 after having a kick blocked, but has made 4-of-5 PAT tries and kicked off 24 times. Mulder is 3-for-3 on field goal opportunites and 9-for-11 on extra points.

THE ARMY-EASTERN MICHIGAN SERIES
► Army and Eastern Michigan have met four times before on the gridiron. The Black Knights have won all four games, including both of their previous trips to Ypsilanti.
► Saturday is Army’s third consecutive trip to Rynearson Stadium. The Black Knights opened the 2009 and 2010 seasons on the road versus the Eagles. The Eagles are set to make a return trip to West Point on Oct. 12, 2013.

MAPLES OFF TO SWEET START
► Junior RB Raymond Maples has reached the 100-yard rushing mark in four of Army’s first six games. He was the first Army player to start a season with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games since Akili King did it in 1993.
► Maples has run for 100  yards nine times in his career. It is tied for fifth on the Army all-time list, and is the most since Carlton Jones finished his career in 2005 with 11 100-yard outings.

RAY 2K
Raymond Maples became the 10th Army player to run for 2,000 yards in their career when he gained 80 yards against Kent State. Maples sits 10th all-time in Academy history with 2,025 career rushing yards (see chart on previous page).

UP NEXT …
► Army returns home to face Ball State on Oct. 27. The Cardinals will be the Black Knights’ third straight MAC opponent and fourth opponent from that league this season.
► Army holds a 2-1 series lead versus Ball State. The Cardinals earned their first win last season in Muncie, 48-21.
► Army scored a 24-17 win against Ball State in 2009, the Cardinals’ last trip to West Point.
