WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - Rice beat Army, 48-14, for its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.

Chase Clement threw for 299 yards and a school-record five touchdowns and Jarett Dillard caught three TD passes for the Owls (1-5), who snapped a six-game losing streak and won for only the second time in 22 games.

Army (2-3) was attempting to improve to better than .500 for the first time since 1996.

Dillard has caught at least one touchdown pass in his last seven games, the longest streak in the nation.

Clement finished 29-for-39 with no interceptions and became the first Owls quarterback to toss at least four TD passes since 1981.

After Army scored on its opening possession, Rice scored 31 straight points to take control with more than 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half.

Rice had not led in a game since its season opener, when it built a 30-14 lead over rival Houston before losing 31-30. Rice had not won since coming from behind to beat Tulane 42-34 in November.

Andray Downs picked off David Pevoto's pass less than five minutes into the second quarter and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown, leading to a 28-7 Rice lead.

Clement began the game 11-for-13 with 147 yards and three TD passes.

Pevoto's day began in the reverse fashion - he went 2-for-7 for only 18 yards and one interception in Army's first four possessions. However, Pevoto did run for his first career touchdown, a bootleg left from 2 yards out that gave Army a brief 7-0 lead.

But on fourth-and-5 from the Rice 26 with 6 minutes remaining before halftime, Brian Raines sacked Pevoto from behind, knocking the ball loose. Rice took over on its own 32, and eight plays later, Luke Juist kicked a low, 43-yard field goal to give Rice a 31-7 lead with 2:41 remaining in the half.

Army will try to even its record next Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. when the Black Knights welcome VMI into Michie Stadium.
