Watch Trent Steelman AAA Interview
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army junior QB Trent Steelman has been recognized by several outlets for his role in leading the Black Knights to a 21-14 victory over Northwestern at Michie Stadium on Saturday. Steelman has been named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Offensive Player of the Week, the Rivals.com Independent Player of the Week and the College Sports Madness Independent Offensive Player of the Week.
Steelman rushed a career-high 28 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns in the Black Knights' win over the Wildcats. It was the Bowling Green, Ky., native's second straight 100-yard game and the second consecutive week he rushed for three scores. Steelman has accounted for seven of the Black Knights' nine rushing touchdowns this season, including Army's last six scores.
Steelman has now quarterbacked the Black Knights to three of the four victories over opponents from Bowl Championship Series automatic-qualifying conferences in program history (Vanderbilt, 2009; Duke, 2010; Northwestern, 2011).
Steelman leads the Black Knights and ranks 35th nationally in rushing average at 100.7 yards per game. He is fourth in that category among quarterbacks, and leads all signal callers with seven rushing touchdowns.
Army's starting quarterback for all 28 games of his collegiate career, Steelman is the first Black Knights' player to earn an FBS Independent Player of the Week honor. The honor, started this season, is selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions' (Army, Brigham Young, Navy and Notre Dame) markets.
The Black Knights (1-2) will travel to Ball State this week. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on the internet by ESPN3.
