July 17, 2014

HOUSTON, Texas  – A pair of Army seniors are among the candidates for the 2014 Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top running back, it was announced today.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced the list of nominees this morning and Raymond Maples and Terry Baggett are among the list of 53.

Maples, who played in just three games before an injury in 2013, returns for his senior season. He rushed for 1,000 yards as a sophomore and junior, just the third Army back to pass the century mark in consecutive seasons. Maples, from Philadelphia, Pa., has 10 career 100-yard rushing games.

Baggett, from Chicago, Ill., rushed for 1,304 yards last season. He has run for at least 100 yards on six occasions, including an Academy-record 304-yard game against Eastern Michigan last season. An Academic All-America choice as a junior, he is a Chemical Engineering major.

A national selection committee, consisting of former NFL All-Pro selections, college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives will determine semifinalists in November. The winner will be announced Dec. 11 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

The award, now in its 25th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker.

Army will open the 2014 season, the first under head coach Jeff Monken, on Sept. 6 against Buffalo at Michie Stadium.

Single-game and season tickets are now on sale. Army will welcome Buffalo, Ball State, Rice, Air Force and Fordham to historic Michie Stadium this year. The Black Knights will also play Connecticut at Yankee Stadium.
