WEST POINT, N.Y.  - Army head football coach Jeff Monken and Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen recently returned from an overseas visit and survey of graduates downrange.

The six-day trip allowed Lt. Gen Caslen and Coach Monken an opportunity to see the troops, participate in roundtables with graduates and faculty, walking tours and to spend time with soldiers who are deployed.

"This was an amazing experience," said Monken. "To see what our graduates do on a daily basis was a great learning opportunity for me. We develop leaders of character and it was motivating and inspiring to see the tremendous education and training put to work.

"The trip also allowed me a chance to meet with former football players," Monken continued. "It was great to hear their passion for Army football. I will carry their desire to win with me each and every game. We are going to work our hardest to put a fundamentally sound team on the field each Saturday who will out-work the opponent. Winning is important and this trip reinforced that."

Kabul, Afghanistan, was the first stop on the journey and Lt. Gen. Caslen and Monken had breakfast and roundtable discussion with soldiers. Meetings occurred throughout the day before moving to Bagram Airfield in the Parwan Providence north of Kabul. Additional meetings and meals followed to include visits to several units at their remote Forward Operating Bases.

The trip included visits to Kandahar Airfield the next day for more sensing sessions and unit tours prior to an aviation walking tour and dinner with former football players. Coach Monken then spent an hour talking with the former players before signing autographs for soldiers and civilians in the local Morale, Welfare and Recreating facility.

On Friday, the trip ventured back to Kabul before the returning to the U.S. from Delhi.
