WEST POINT, N.Y. – Head coach Jeff Monken recently announced that rising firsties Geoffery Bacon and Larry Dixon will serve as captains of the Army football team for the 2014 season. The Black Knights recently completed their spring drills and will open the upcoming season at Michie Stadium on Sept. 6 versus Buffalo.
“I’m excited for those guys,” head coach Jeff Monken said. “I think both of them have displayed the kind of leadership it takes to earn the respect of their teammates and be voted team captains. I’m sure they’ll do a great job leading our team, along with the two guys we voted on our leadership council who are going to take a leadership role as well. I think it speaks to the respect their teammates have for them.”
Bacon has been a regular in the Army starting lineup since his arrival at West Point. A middle linebacker, his first two seasons, the Milwaukee, Wis., native started five games as a plebe and all 12 games during his sophomore season. His 136 tackles in 2012 ranks ninth on the Army single-season list. Prior to his junior season, Bacon moved to safety where he started all eight games he played in. He was second on the team with 63 tackles in 2013. The three-year letterwinner has 259 career tackles, tied for 20th on the Army all-time ledger. He has 13 career games with at least 10 tackles.
Dixon has also been a fixture in the Army lineup since his rookie campaign, playing in 33 games which include 25 starting assignments. Despite missing two games as a junior, he ran for 705 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per carry.
