WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Army was back on the Foley Athletic Center field Thursday morning for its second spring practice of 2013. Once again, the workout was conducted in helmets and shorts with no contact.

Thursday’s Notables

  • Army went through its normal routine on Thursday, but today’s pace was significantly faster than Tuesday.
  • The coaches introduced the “combative” drills at the end of practice. Army will conduct its first padded practice of the spring next Tuesday.
  • There were some tweaks to the first group on offense. A.J. Schurr was under center while Kelvin White and Angel Santiago rotated with the second group.
  • Terry Baggett and Stephen Fraser were the first-team slotbacks on Thursday.
  • Justin Gilbert was working with the first group at right tackle.
  • The most noticeable change on Thursday was Hayden Tippett working with the defense. Last year’s backup fullback was working the mike linebackers.
  • Converted running back Marcus Poling is also trying his hand at the mike linebacker spot. Poling and Tippett were joined by Tunde Akinniyi and Tyler McLees.

Thursday’s Quotables
Co-Defensive Coordinator Payam Saadat
(Ref.: the goals for the defensive front this spring)
“For the front, we have to make sure that our footwork is correct. A lot of the compromising positions that we got put in was because of our initial footwork. We need to have a greater understanding of the technique. Look at the Ball State game for example. A couple of times our lack of awareness of when to get up the field as opposed to sitting a little calmer allowed for that running back to get underneath us. We’re taking the young guys that have experience and trying to make them mature guys with experience.”

(Ref.: being able to work with so many players with significant game experience)
“A lot of these guys are hearing everything for the second, third or fourth time so that should be good. This is the first year in the last three that we finally have a group of guys that have been there, done that. They’re  not learning a new language, but rather becoming more fluent. That’s a promising thing.”

(Ref.: having so many defensive player sitting out this spring)
“We have to figure out what the young guys are all about. Things are always going to happen during spring practice with academics or injuries. We have more numbers than most people do, and that gives us the opportunity to find out about a bunch of guys. Some guys we obviously know can play, but there is a slew of guys that we need to find out more about.”
