Jan. 16, 2014

Senior wide receiver Patrick Laird, a native of nearby Monroe, N.Y., is in St. Petersburg, Fla., this week preparing for the 89th East-West Shrine Game. Laird will provide periodic updates on his trip.

Continuing the long tradition of Black Knights' playing in the senior showcase, Laird is the 28th Army player to compete in the game. The East-West Shrine Game will be played Jan. 18 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. and the NFL Network will carry the contest. Laird is now a member of the West squad, after being moved from the East team.

Laird has some company in Florida as Army's head equipment manager Nick Determan, will oversee the equipment needs of both teams. This marks the eighth straight season Determan has headed up the uniform and equipment oversight. Head football manager Zach Marciano is also in Florida assisting Determan.

Update #2
After being “traded” to the West team on Wednesday, I had to learn my second new offense in four days and was thrown right into the middle of it.

Luckily, we had meetings in the morning on Wednesday and practice in the afternoon so the coaches and my fellow receivers, including Quincy Enunwa, have been a tremendous help. Enunwa, from Nebraska, was injured and that moved me to the West team.

All of the coaches welcomed me with open arms, especially head coach Romeo Crennel. I have become friends with all three quarterbacks, Tommy Rees from Notre Dame, Keith Wenning from Ball State and Keith Price from University of Washington.  I am still learning and meeting new people but I am very excited for the game on Saturday. It has been great to meet all of the players and coaches from both teams.

For those who will watch the game, I will no longer be wearing 81, my number I wore at Army, instead, I will be wearing #18.

Thanks for reading.
#18 Patrick Laird
