Missouri Holds Off Army, 67-58

Box Score

COLUMBIA, Mo. Stefhon Hannah and Kalen Grimes each scored 18 points as Missouri held off an inspired effort put forth by the Army men’s basketball team, defeating the Black Knights, 67-58, at the John Thompson Foundation Classic Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.

Missouri (2-0) went on a 10-2 spurt to assume a 52-44 advantage after Army (1-1) had erased a 20-point deficit with a furious 28-8 run that spanned the first and second halves and tied the game at 42-42.

The Tigers kept the pesky Black Knights at bay throughout the remainder of the contest, as Army was able to crawl no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Missouri, which never trailed in the game, opened the contest outscoring Army, 23-7. The Tigers hit nine of their first 13 shots during that spurt, including 4 of 4 from three-point range. Missouri, which scored 21 points off of 15 Black Knight turnovers in the opening stanza, built its largest lead of the first half at 34-14 with five minutes remaining.

That is when Army began its spirited comeback.

Army's charge began with a 12-4 run to end the first half, trimming Missouri’s lead to 38-26 at halftime. Matt Bell led the Black Knights in the opening half with 10 points on 4 of 4 shooting from the field. The senior hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half, including a trey from the right wing as the first half clock expired. Jarell Brown added nine points in the first half, connecting on 4 of 8 field goals.

Army’s surge continued in the second half as the Black Knights outscored Missouri, 16-4, over the first six and a half minutes of the stanza to pull even at 42-42 at the 13:35 mark. Brown hit three triples and scored a total of 11 of his team-high 20 points during the run.

Army freshman Chris Walker finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Bell finished with 17 points.

The John Thompson Foundation Classic continues tomorrow (Nov. 12) with Army set to play North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. (EST).
