TIP-OFF TIDBITS
► For the second straight season, Army starts its campaign at the Army ROTC All-Military Classic. The Black Knights will face Air Force in the season opener on Saturday before facing either VMI or The Citadel on Sunday afternoon.
► The Black Knights went 0-2 in last year's event, losing to the Falcons and Bulldogs.
► Army returns four of its top five scorers from last season, including senior F Ella Ellis. Ellis led the Black Knights in both scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (4.9 rpg) in 2011-12 en route to first-team All-Patriot League honors. Ellis was also a second-team NABC All-District selection. He was the first Army player to earn first-team all-league accolades since 2008 and the Black Knights' first all-district selection since 1995. Ellis was a preseason All-Patriot selection.
► Junior G Josh Herbeck also averaged double figures last season, scoring 10.3 points per game. Already one of the top 10 three-point shooters in Army history, Herbeck has made more three-pointers (113) than any player in school history in their first two seasons. His 40 three-pointers during Patriot League play led the conference.
► Of the 18 Black Knights in uniform this weekend, 14 are freshmen or sophomores, including eight plebes. Army's probably starting lineup includes two rookies -- guard Dylan Cox and forward Tanner Plomb. Army started one freshman (Maxwell Lenox) in the season opener against Air Force last year, and had four plebes start at least once in 2011-12.
► The Black Knights start the 2012-13 season in search of the program's first winning season since 1984-85. Army has come close to breaking the dubious streak in recent seasons, finishing 15-16 in 2006-07, 14-16 in 2007-08 and 14-15 in 2009-10.
► Army has relied on the three-point shot in the last two seasons, setting an Academy record with 264 triples in 2010-11 and 238 last season. The team's top two long-distance threats from last year return in Herbeck (75) and Ellis (63).

A WIN OVER AIR FORCE WOULD ...
► Give Army a 3-2 lead in the all-time series versus the Falcons.
► Be Army's third straight win against a service academy (2-0 vs. Navy last season).
► End the Black Knights' four-game losing streak dating back to last season.
► Snap Army's two-game losing streak in games away from West Point.
► Be the second time Army started the season with a win under Zach Spiker.
► End Army's three-game losing streak in season openers played away from West Point.
► Mark head coach Zach Spiker's 38th win at West Point (37-52).

THE ARMY-AIR FORCE SERIES
► The all-time series between Army and Air Force is tied at 2-2. Prior to last season's Air Force win, the two service academies had not met on the basketball court since Nov. 28, 1987 at the Freedom Bowl Classic in Irvine, Calif. Last year's All-Military Class was Army's first trip to the Air Force Academy.
► The Black Knights won the first meeting, 68-49, at West Point on Jan. 27, 1977. The two teams did not meet again until the 1985-86 season when Army,  Navy and Air Force traveled to Tokyo, Japan to particpate in the Suntory Ball. Air Force took a 56-50 win in that contest.

ON THE MARGIN

SCOREBOARD WATCHING

► Army's chances for success increase dramatically when scoring at least 70 points. The Black Knights own a record of 32-16 in the last 48 games when scoring at least 70 points. Army is 179-36 (.833) all-time when scoring at least 80 in a game.
► Sixty (60) points is usually Army's magic number. The Black Knights are 47-35 in their last 82 games when reaching the 60-point mark. Conversely, Army has won just 13 of its last 62 games when not scoring at least 60 points (13-49).
